What Is Kontakt? And Why Do You Need It?

Kontakt is one of those plugins every composer and producer should have in their toolbox. But what even is it?

You’ve probably seen it used in YouTube tutorials without any context. You’ve probably also seen “Requires Kontakt” on a store page. And if you’re new to music production, then you might be confused about what it’s for.

What Is Kontakt?

Kontakt is a VST plugin created by Native Instruments. It’s the host program that powers hundreds of software instruments created by NI and other developers. It’s also a powerful sampler that lets you create and edit your own instruments by importing audio samples.

There are two versions of this plugin: the full version and the free Player version.

What Is Kontakt Player?

Kontakt Player is the free version of Kontakt. It can run all of Native Instruments’ sample-based instruments, plus any licensed sample library made by third-party developers.

As the name implies, you can only play sounds with it. You can’t use it as a sampler to create new instruments. Those features are restricted to a 15-minute demo.

How Does Kontakt Work?

Kontakt works like any other sampler. Instead of generating tones directly from an oscillator (like a synthesizer), it uses recorded audio. You can program simple patches like a basic drum kit, or something complex like a full symphony orchestra with multiple sounds and articulations.

Kontakt Sample Libraries

Many developers create unique instruments from the ground up for Kontakt. You can purchase sample libraries from these developers and add them to your sonic palette.

These libraries are different from standalone VSTs. They’ll only run inside Kontakt, and you can’t use them in any other engine.

Native Instruments offers a huge range of sample-based instruments for Kontakt. Purchase them individually, or get them as part of a Komplete 14 bundle.

Kontakt 7 Features

The full version of Kontakt 7 comes loaded with plenty of goodies. Let’s go over some of its major features.

Access to Every Kontakt Sample Library Ever Made

There are two types of Kontakt sample libraries: Licensed and unlicensed.

  • Licensed libraries will work in the free version. You don’t have to purchase any additional software.
  • Unlicensed libraries require the full version of Kontakt to run.

Not every third-party library runs in the free Player. Before you buy a product, check to see if it’s compatible with your version of Kontakt.

Sample Editing and Mapping Tools

Upload your audio samples. Then cut, slice, and loop them any way you like.

Kontakt also lets you map multiple sounds throughout the keyboard. So you could use a single sample on every key, or place multiple sounds and articulations on the same key.

90+ Effects and Modulation Modules

Kontakt allows for all sorts of sound shaping thanks to its 92 effects modules. These include reverbs, delays, guitar amps, and tons of other filters.

Plus, it comes with additional modules that affect every parameter you can think of.

  • Vibrato
  • Envelope Controls
  • LFOs
  • Step Sequencers
  • MIDI Keyswitches
  • And much more!

Advanced Routing and Scripting

For power users, Kontakt’s routing features let you create highly complex instruments. With them, you can build sophisticated FX chains, elaborate mic positioning, multi-channel setups, and more.

On top of that, its advanced scripting language allows developers to dig even further into the weeds. This programming language lets you tweak the most granular details in the audio signal. Plus, you can use it to create custom GUIs for your instruments.

Why You Need Kontakt

For one, Kontakt is the host platform for countless sample-based instruments. You’ll need it to expand your digital collection of sounds beyond the low-quality freebies everyone uses.

It’s especially vital for film, TV, and game composers. These industries are getting more and more saturated with musicians wanting to break in. And while it’s not everything, having high-quality sample libraries can give you a competitive edge.

But even if you’re primarily an electronic musician, you still need a good sampler. While there are tons of free sampler VSTs, very few are as powerful or useful as Kontakt.

How Do You Get Kontakt?

You can purchase Kontakt directly from the Native Instruments store. It also comes with the Komplete 14 bundles.

Once you purchase either Kontakt or Komplete, you’ll need to install the Native Access app on your computer. From there, log in and follow the prompts to install it on your device.
