TAL-U-NO-62: This Free Juno-60 Emulation Still Holds Up

The Roland Juno-60 is one of the most iconic synthesizers of all time. And if you want those phat analog sounds on a budget, you’re in luck!

Lately, I’ve been trying several Juno-60 emulations. Of all the free plugins available, the TAL-U-NO-62 has been my favorite.

What Is TAL-U-NO-62?

TAL-U-NO-62 is a free synth plugin that emulates the Roland Juno-60. Like the original, it features six-voice polyphony, a DCO (digitally controlled oscillator) with a sub-oscillator, and built-in chorus effects. The plugin was created by TAL Software.

Simply put, it’s a surprisingly faithful recreation of the Juno-60. It’s available in VST and AU formats and works with every major DAW.

TAL-U-NO-62 Features

If you’re already familiar with the original Juno-60, then you’ll be comfortable with the U-NO-62’s features. I won’t list everything here. That said, there are a few standout features I’d like to point out.

Six-Voice Polyphony

This synth plays up to six voices at a time. It’s not much by today’s standards, but it’s more than enough to make lush, gooey pads and other rich keyboard sounds.

Syncable LFO

You can sync the LFO to your DAW session’s tempo. That, and you can also change it to one of five different waveforms to give it unique characteristics. Use this to add vibrato to your sounds

Chorus Settings

It wouldn’t be a Juno without that iconic chorus! And thankfully, TAL-U-NO-62 gives you all three chorus settings (I, II, and I+II).

20 Presets

U-No-62 comes with 20 presets to get you started. These range from various basses, leads, pads, and other FX.

TAL-U-NO-62 Bugs

My experience with TAL’s plugin has been relatively bug-free. That said, there were a few instances where it would freeze on a sound.

This mostly happens when I add or change plugins while the track is playing. That said, you should be fine if you pause your session before making changes.

Is TAL-U-NO-62 Still Supported?

U-No-62 is over 15 years old at this point in time. And from what I gather, TAL doesn’t actively support it anymore.

Understandably, they’ve moved on to other projects.

Alternatives to TAL-U-NO-62

While U-NO-62 is great, there are a few other options worth considering.

First is TAL-U-NO-LX. It’s essentially the premium version of this plugin. You can learn more about TAL-U-NO-LX here.

The LX faithfully recreates the iconic sound of the analog Juno-60 synthesizer. Painstakingly modeled after an actual hardware unit, this virtual instrument captures all the warmth and nostalgic charm of the original classic synth.

Another free option is Sixth Month June by Elektrostudio. It’s an older plugin, but many people seem to like it. My experience was pretty buggy, which you can learn about in my review.
