What is Kontakt?
Kontakt is a sampler plugin that powers software instruments created by Native Instruments and other sample library companies. It comes in two versions:
- Kontakt 7 — This is the full version of Kontakt. It acts as the hub for many sample libraries. It’s also a powerful sampler that lets you create and edit your own instruments.
- Kontakt 7 Player — The free version of Kontakt. It only runs select software instruments and lacks all the sampling features the full version has.

What is Komplete 14?
Komplete 14 is a software bundle sold by Native Instruments. It comes in multiple versions. But generally, each one includes some version of Kontakt along with some sample-based instruments that run inside Kontakt.
On top of that, each version of Komplete includes other products:
- Synthesizers like Massive or Massive X
- Other software instruments and engines like Reaktor and Battery
- Mixing, mastering, and effects plugins
- Expansions with samples and presets for other Native Instruments products
For a deeper dive, you can check out our side-by-side comparisons of Komplete 14 Standard, Ultimate, and Collector’s Editions. Each of those three versions includes the full version of Kontakt.
You can also look at our comparison of Komplete Now and Komplete 14: Standard.
Does the Full Version of Kontakt Come With Komplete 14?
The full version of Kontakt is included with Komplete 14 Standard and higher. It’s not included with Komplete 14 Select, Start, or Now editions.
Instead, those lower-priced versions come with the free Kontakt Player. If you get Komplete 14 Select, you can upgrade to one of the higher versions at a later time.
Should You Buy Komplete 14 or Just Stick With Kontakt?
Kontakt is arguably one of the most essential plugins for any working musician. But you’ll get the most value from picking up one of the Komplete 14 bundles.
- Kontakt 7 as a standalone product costs $299.
- For just $300 more, you can get Komplete 14: Standard along with a host of other instruments, samples, and plugins. Combined, the individual products sell for over $9,000.
And if you want even more bang for your buck, you can opt for either Ultimate or Collector’s Edition.
But if all you need is an incredible sampler without the extra plugins, then you might be fine with Kontakt by itself.
Can You Upgrade from Kontakt to Komplete?
If you own Kontakt but don’t have a Komplete license, you may qualify for a special discount on a Komplete 14 Standard or Ultimate package. Log into your Native Instruments account and go to “My KOMPLETE Offers” and see what discounts you can apply.
However, you won’t qualify for the Collector’s Edition. To see a full list of Kontakt and Komplete upgrades and crossgrades, check out this handy resource from Native Instruments.
