On top of all that, Dexed works as a MIDI cartridge manager for actual DX7 hardware.

For a straightforward DX7 emulation, the Arturia DX7 V has you covered. It’s a faithful recreation in terms of both look and sound. 

Boot it up, and you’ll immediately notice the charming GUI that looks just like the original instrument. But it doesn’t stop there.

There are some subtle differences in the sound. But that won’t stop you from getting the DX7 sound for your tracks.

DX7 V also comes with enhancements that bring it up to speed with modern workflows. You’ll find over 500 presets, plus a wide range of built-in effects that weren’t available on the original.

FM8 isn’t exactly a DX7 emulation like the other plugins on this list. But it is one of the most powerful FM software synths you can find.

The user interface is clean and intuitive, making it easy to design sounds from scratch. It’s honestly one of the best ways to learn FM synthesis if you’re not familiar with it.

But if you’re not into sound design, don’t worry. FM8 comes with over 1200 presets. So you can start making incredible music right away.

It’s also compatible with SYSEX files, letting you use existing DX7 patches. They might sound a bit different though.

All in all, FM8 one of the most powerful synthesizers you can have in your collection. Period.
